Doctor at Valais Hospital wins discrimination lawsuit against Bern University Hospital

For more than 10 years, PD Dr. med. Natalie Urwyler defended herself against her former employer, the Inselspital in Bern. She had already successfully won once in court against her unfair dismissal.

Now the doctor has not only defended herself before the Bern Regional Court against the dismissal, but also against lack of promotion due to being a wife and mother. In addition, she received less money from the so-called ‘private medical pool’.

The judgment states “that the plaintiff was discriminated against in a gender-specific manner with an effect on the distribution from the private medical pool” and that she “was also discriminated against in a gender-specific way with regard to promotion”.

As the first legal judgment in Switzerland involving a claim of dismissal in connection with gender discrimination, this sets an important precedent. Find out more on SRF (in German).
